A roofline outlines the house, but wrapped trees are what give a yard depth after dark. We wrap trunks and main limbs with 5mm mini LED strands on 4-inch spacing, pulled snug in a spiral so the light sits against the bark instead of floating in loose loops. Density is the whole difference between a professional wrap and a strand thrown over a branch: a trunk wrapped at 100 lights per vertical foot glows as a solid column, while a loose wrap reads as scattered dots. Large ponderosa pines and old cottonwoods around Missoula take the most work, since a 30-inch trunk can absorb several hundred lights before the first branch, and we quote those from the design visit rather than guessing.
Shrubs and hedges get a different treatment. Rather than wrapping each branch, we drape mini LED net lights or run strands in even rows across the top of the plant so the shape shows without crushing it under snow. All of it runs on the same photocell timer as your roofline and plugs into a GFCI outlet through rated outdoor extension cord, which matters in a yard where cord may sit under snow for a month. We wrap at a consistent pitch so the spacing between wraps stays the same from the ground to the first limb, which is what makes a trunk look lit from any angle. Standard density is 100 mini lights per vertical foot on trunks over 12 inches across.
Mini LEDs run cool enough to sit against bark for months without scorching it, and we wrap loosely enough at the limbs that spring growth is not girdled. Everything comes off in January, well before the sap runs, so the tree never carries wire into the growing season.
Reaching the first limbs on a mature ponderosa means working 15 to 25 feet up, and our crew sets ladders and ties off the same way they do on a framing job. That is the difference between a tree wrapped to the canopy and one that stops where a stepladder ran out.
Wrapped trees are usually the farthest thing from an outlet, so we map cord runs during the design visit and use outdoor-rated cord sized for the distance. Runs are kept under the strand manufacturer's connection limit, and each tree ties back to a GFCI outlet on the same photocell timer as the house.
At the design visit we walk the yard and decide which trees carry the display. One or two well-placed trunks near the entry usually do more than lighting every tree on the lot.
We measure trunk circumference and the height to the first limbs, then calculate strand count at your chosen density. That number drives the quote, so you see exactly what each tree costs before saying yes.
Each strand starts at the base and spirals upward at a set pitch, with the plug end hidden at ground level. Limbs are wrapped outward from the trunk so the light tapers naturally toward the canopy.
Cords are routed along fence lines or buried under mulch where possible and connected to the photocell timer. In January we unwrap each strand and store it with the rest of your display.
